Synopsis

Well-being dimensions encompasses physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental health. In Malaysia and Indonesia, well-being issues are diverse, affecting various population groups, and require multifaceted solutions. Thus, an interdisciplinary approach is crucial to tackling well-being issues in both countries. Addressing these challenges requires coordinated efforts across disciplines, combining cultural sensitivity, robust healthcare systems, and sustainable development practices to improve quality of life of human well-being. By combining expertise from various fields, this approach ensures comprehensive care that addresses all facets of well-being.

An analysis of publication trends reveals that researchers affiliated with institutions in Indonesia and Malaysia are increasingly focusing on interdisciplinary topics, particularly in public policy, technology, and economics. This reflects a broader commitment to addressing multifaceted societal challenges through collaborative research.

A study on older Malaysians found that perceived social support mediates the relationship between functional limitations and both depressive symptoms and quality of life. This underscores the importance of a multidisciplinary approach that includes social support systems to improve overall well-being among older populations. Instead, an analysis of subjective well-being across different provinces in Indonesia demonstrated the importance of considering multiple dimensions, including economic, social, and health factors. This multidimensional approach provides a more comprehensive understanding of well-being, informing policies that address the diverse needs of the population.

The strength of a multidisciplinary approach lies in its capacity to adapt to individual and community needs while maintaining a holistic perspective. However, it is not without challenges. Effective coordination requires shared goals, open communication, and robust organizational frameworks. Investments in technology, such as integrated data systems and telehealth platforms, are vital for enabling seamless collaboration among disciplines. Despite these challenges, the benefits of comprehensive care, efficient resource use, and enhanced health outcomes far outweigh the barriers, making the multidisciplinary approach an indispensable model for achieving sustainable well-being.
